History and Details

Sigiriya Rock Fortress, also known as Lion Rock, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic landmarks. This ancient fortress was built by King Kashyapa in the 5th century AD. According to legend, Kashyapa murdered his father, King Dhatusena, to seize the throne. Fearing retribution from his brother Moggallana, the rightful heir, Kashyapa built his palace atop the massive rock to protect himself.

  • The Lion’s Gate: As you ascend the rock, you’ll pass through the Lion’s Gate, where massive lion paws are carved into the rock, symbolizing strength and power.
  • Frescoes: Halfway up the rock, you’ll find the famous frescoes of Sigiriya, depicting celestial maidens. These well-preserved paintings are a testament to ancient artistry and the refined aesthetic sense of the time.
  • Mirror Wall: Adjacent to the frescoes is the Mirror Wall, once polished to reflect the king’s image. Today, it is covered with ancient graffiti dating back to the 7th century, providing insights into the thoughts of early visitors.
